Locus roundup of best book lists
Locus Online has posted a list of science fiction, fantasy, and horror novels that have appeared on various "Year's Best Books" lists, such as Publisher's Weekly, Time Magazine, Newsweek, etc, etc.
Along with the requisite latest Harry Potter installment, the list included interesting titles such as The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon, The Terror by Dan Simmons, and Thirteen by Richard K. Morgan.
The first gets a mention as a possibly interesting alternate history. However, judging by the Amazon reviews, you will either love or hate Michael Chabon's tale. The "what if" in this story is based on Alaska becoming the temporary homeland for the Jews after WWII, taking that twist of events as a backstory to the main noir story.
The Terror is a retelling of a famous 1845 expedition whose events remain a mystery to this day. As is the norm for Arctic expeditions, insanity, cannablism, mutiny, and unknown ice creatures plague the crew. Dan Simmons is certainly no slouch as an author, so this tale should make for good reading, preferably somewhere warm.
As for the latest Michael K Morgan yarn, Thirteen...I know he has a following that like the Takeshi Kovacs novels so maybe they'll find something interesting in this.
